The Abington Township Board of Commissioners will present the 36th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Service on January 18, 2021 at 12 PM. This year's event will be virtual and contain tributes from Abington School District, residents, and local community groups.

Abington Friends School, as part of their Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, is requesting donations for:
- Gently Used Clothing for Women’s Center of Montgomery County.
- Non-perishable food items for Jenkintown Food Cupboard
- Children’s books in good condition for BookSmiles
- Donations can be made at school drop-off and pick-up or on the weekends in the Lower School and Muller Auditorium vestibules at AFS through next week.
What: Create zines for the Library's website. To participate, scan your original zine and email it to mmitchell@mclinc.org or dropoff a paper copy during the Library's curbside hours.
Who: Teens ages 12 - 18

What: Food drive to stock up the Interfaith Food Cupboard. Please see flyer below for most needed items.

What: A blood drive for the American Red Cross. Appointments can be made online at www.redcrossblood.org with sponsor code Abington Township Police.
When: Tuesday, January 19, 2021 from 10 AM - 3 PM

Snack Bags are being assembled for the Breathing Room Foundation located in Elkins Park. The Foundation provides support with families affected by cancer. The snack bags will be distributed to children and their families battling cancer.

- Donations are being accepted through January 18, 2021.
WHERE:
- Donations can be dropped off at 138 Central Avenue, North Hills, PA 19038 or in the collection box found at the Abington Township Building, 1176 Old York Road, Abington PA 19001.
WHAT:
There are several ways to participate. From a box of granola bars, handwritten notes, or assembled bags, donations are greatly appreciated!
- BRF Snack Bags: Add a small water bottle or 100% fruit drink, plus 2 or 3 individually wrapped snacks with a handmade note to a quart size ziploc bag. The snacks may include: granola bars, Goldfish, cookies, raisins, pretzels, etc. Your colorful handwritten “Have a Good Day” or “Thinking of You” note will remind our BRF families that we are thinking of them. Please no mints or hard candy.
- BRF Breakfast Bags: Add a small water bottle or 100% fruit drink and 2 or 3 individually wrapped breakfast food items to a quart size ziploc type bag. Add 2 or 3 of the following items: applesauce, single serve box of cereal, oatmeal pack, breakfast/granola bar or box of raisins to fill the bag. Add a handmade “Have a Good Day” or “Thinking of You” note to the bag.
- Food donations to be added to bags
- Notes of encouragement to be added to bags

Troop 1 Abington will be collecting goods and donations to create blessings bags for the homeless in the Abington community beginning January 9 through January 31, 2021.

When: Donations will be accepted beginning January 6 through January 31, 2021. When it is safe to do so, the scouts will get together and assemble and distribute the bags.

What: Collection of new, unopened packages of socks for St. Miriam's Blessing Bag Street Outreach. The socks can be any color or size for adults (male or female) and children.

What: Scraping of Spotted Lanternfly egg masses
When: Anytime beginning Wednesday, January 13, 2021!
Where: Anywhere! Explore your neighborhood, local park, or back yard!
How: Pick up egg scraping kits at the Abington Township Building Lobby, 1176 Old York Road, Abington, PA 19001. Kits include a containment baggie, scrapping sticks and vinegar bottles. Learn how to remove eggs by watching this video! Post pictures with #AbingtonMLK and #spottedscrapping.

Community Leaders Come Together to Celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy
Abington, PA- Abington Township Board of Commissioners held its 34th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Service event on January 21, 2019. The event hosted at Abington Senior High School, brought together elected officials, community leaders, students and residents to reflect on the message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his call for justice, cooperation and understanding of all people.
The event included remarks by Congresswoman Madeleine Dean, State Senator Art Haywood’s office, State Representative Benjamin Sanchez, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, Montgomery County Commissioner Chair Dr. Valerie Arkoosh and Montgomery County Commissioner Vice- Chair Kenneth Lawrence. The remarks were united in their call to end discrimination and injustices against all people and a commitment to work towards a more just and fair tomorrow both socially and economically. Remarks were followed by beautiful tributes from Abington School District’s, Rydal Elementary School, Overlook Elementary School and Abington Junior High School, who did musical performances and reflections in honor of King’s life.
The event also included musical performances by Salem Baptist Church, the “No Place for Hate Pledge” led by Mrs. Shirley Dennis and Deputy Chief, Kelley Warner of the Abington Police Department, benediction by McKinley Memorial Baptist Church and recognition of two outstanding award recipients and Abington Township natives, Honorable Kelley B. Hodge, Esq. and Mr. Bernard Griggs, Jr.
The Honorable Kelley B. Hodge, Esq. received the 34th Annual Memorial Award for her promotion of harmony, cooperation and understanding throughout the community. Introduced by Cheltenham Treasurer, Napoleon Nelson, Ms. Hodge was the first African American woman to serve as District Attorney in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the City of Philadelphia. She has worked to improve communities near and far through her efforts as a Title IX coordinator for the University of Virginia, appointment as a Safe School Advocate under former Governor Tom Corbett, and her important work at the District Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia. Her keynote speech emphasized the importance of believing in yourself and one another, justice, perseverance, and love.
The Special Recognition Award recipient was Mr. Bernard Griggs, Jr., for his work on economic equality as a business representative for the Philadelphia Building and Construction Trades Council, AFL- CIO. In this capacity, Mr. Griggs represents over 80,000 union workers of all backgrounds to ensure that they receive just and fair compensation regardless of gender, nationality, race, religion, etc. He also sits and has served on several prestigious committees, task forces, etc. at the local, county and state level, where he has used his leadership to advance the ideals of Martin Luther King, Jr. This award was presented by Anthony Luker, Education Outreach Specialist for the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General.
The Memorial Service would not have been possible without the assistance of the School District, community leaders, elected officials and township staff. Next year’s 35thAnnual Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 20, 2020 at 12:00 PM at the Abington Senior High School Auditorium.

35th Annual Memorial Service Reflection
Abington Township Board of Commissioners held its 35th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Service event on January 20, 2020. The event included remarks from elected officials and community leaders, including Congresswoman Madeleine Dean, State Senator Art Haywood’s office, State Representative Benjamin Sanchez, Dr. Jeffrey Fecher, and Rabbi Glanzberg- Krainin, tributes by Abington Senior High School, Highland Elementary School and McKinley Elementary School, musical performances by Salem Baptist Church, and recognition of outstanding community leaders and organizations. Remarks and tributes were united in their message to work towards equality, peace, and justice for all and called to end of discrimination.
Award recipients included two Tuskegee Airmen of the Philadelphia Chapter, Dr. Eugene Richardson Jr. and Mr. Nathan O. Thomas, community activist, Mr. John C. Hill, and Wilco Electronics Systems, Inc. The Tuskegee Airmen were the nation’s first black fighter pilots to see combat during World War II and helped forward the integration of African Americans into all sectors and positions within the military through President Truman’s 1948 executive order ending segregation in the military. Dr. Eugene Richardson, Jr. and Mr. Nathan O. Thomas both served courageously in the war and were commended for their commitment and dedication to their country despite unjust barriers to their success and for paving a path for future generations.
Mr. John C. Hill was recognized for his volunteerism and community activism in Abington. Mr. Hill served his community through his leadership at church, local civic associations, and Montgomery County Democratic Committee, as well as participation and mentorship in the Delaware Valley National Technical Association, After School Independent Learning Institute Program, and Council of Independent Black Institutions. For the past 95 years, Mr. Hill has made a tremendous impact on his community and has influenced the lives of many.
Wilco Electronic Systems, Inc. (Wilco) is one of the only African- American privately owned cable operations in the nation that provides affordable cable and technology services to low-income communities, commercial, governmental, and educational institutions for over 30 years. Founded by Mr. Will F. Daniel and under the leadership of Mrs. Brigette Daniel-Corbin, Wilco continues to works towards ending the digital divide in disadvantaged communities through the use of emerging technologies, private/public partnerships, and innovative solutions. The Daniel’s family commitment to serving the underprivileged and working to end the digital divide is representative of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's. call for equality and a contributing factor to Wilco’s selection as a 35th Annual Memorial Award recipient.
The Memorial Service would not have been possible without the assistance of the School District, community leaders, elected officials, and township staff. Next year’s 36thAnnual Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 18, 2021, at noon at the Abington Senior High School Auditorium.
